Questions

The things people ask us most.

If your question isn’t answered here, call us on 1300 866 761. Our clinical team would rather talk it through than have you guess.

Appointments

  • How do I book an appointment?

Call the clinic on 1300 866 761 and reception will find you a time. You can also send a request from the Book Online page: pick a day and a time that suits you, tell us briefly what is going on, and we confirm by phone or email. An online request is not a confirmed booking until we come back to you.

  • Where will I be seen?

Appointments run from Narrabeen Sports & Exercise Medicine Centre. The centre also houses sports physicians, orthopaedic specialists and physiotherapists, so where your treatment needs more than podiatry it can often be arranged in the same building. Directions and parking are on the Contact page.

  • Who will I see?

One of our podiatrists. You are welcome to ask for a particular practitioner when you book, and if you have no preference reception will match you to whoever has the right availability and the right interest for your problem. Meet the Team sets out what each of them works on.

Assessment & treatment

  • What happens at an assessment?

We start with your history and what you are trying to get back to. From there we look at how your foot and lower limb move and load, watch you walk or run where that is relevant, and check the shoes you spend most of your time in. You leave with an explanation of what we found and the options for treating it. Reception will tell you how long to allow when you book.

  • What conditions do you treat?

Most foot, ankle and lower limb problems: heel and arch pain, forefoot pain, tendon problems, sports injuries, children’s foot and gait concerns, and pain linked to hypermobility. If you are not sure whether your problem is one for a podiatrist, call and describe it. We would rather tell you honestly that someone else is the better fit.

  • What treatments do you offer?

That depends on the diagnosis. Common options are custom foot orthoses, brace systems such as the Richie Brace, footwear advice, load management, and strength and movement rehabilitation, alongside in-clinic care for skin and nail problems. Our Solutions explains how each of these works and when it is used.

Orthotics

  • Do you make custom orthotics?

Yes. A custom foot orthosis is made to your own foot shape and to the way you load it, rather than picked off a shelf. We assess first, take the measurements the prescription needs, then fit the device and review how it is working once you have been wearing it. The Custom Foot Orthoses page walks through each step.

  • What is a Richie Brace?

A custom ankle foot orthosis that pairs a moulded foot orthosis with uprights and calf straps, for feet and ankles that need more support than an in-shoe device can give. It is one of the brace systems we prescribe and fit here. There is more on the Brace Systems page.

Hypermobility & EDS

  • Do you treat hypermobility and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome?

Yes, and it is a particular interest of this clinic. We combine biomechanical assessment, support strategies and movement rehabilitation, and work alongside the other practitioners at the centre where that helps. Our EDS and HSD pages set out the approach in full.

  • What experience does the clinic have with EDS?

Dr Muhammad (Mo) Maarj holds a PhD in paediatric hypermobility and sits on the Ehlers-Danlos Society international consortium, and other members of the team hold a special interest in hypermobility. The clinic follows current international guidance and contributes to published research in the area.

Children & families

  • Do you see children?

Yes. Several of our podiatrists work with children, and paediatric podiatry is a special interest of the clinic. Bring the shoes your child wears most, sports shoes included, and any reports from other practitioners you have seen.

  • My child has growing pains from sport. Can you help?

Usually, yes. Pain that arrives with a growth spurt or with a jump in training load is common, and it is often manageable once we understand what is loading what. We look at how your child moves, at their training week and at their footwear, then put a plan together. If the pain is severe, waking them at night, or started with a specific injury, say so when you book.
